Setting sail

At 2.25 today our lovely man set his sails for Macfarlane's lantern, peaceful and happy to be forever on the wide blue ocean.
Today was a good day to die.

I’ve just sent this poem to Mags and then I thought it could help everyone in our Macfarlane Blog family.

I found it in a book called
‘Spiritual Wisdom from the Celtic World’ by Jonathan O’Donohue.

On the day when the weight
Deadens on your shoulders and you stumble,
May the clay dance
To balance you.

And when your eyes
Freeze behind
The grey window
And the ghost of loss
Gets in to you,
May a flock of colours,
Indigo, red, green,
And azure blue
Come to awaken in you a meadow of delight.

When the canvas frays
In the curach of thought
And a stain of ocean
Blackens beneath you,
May there come across the waters
A path of yellow moonlight
To bring you safely home.

May the nourishment of the earth be yours,
May the clarity of light be yours,
May the fluency of the ocean be yours,
May the protection of the ancestors be yours.

And so may a slow
Wind work these words
Of love around you,
In an invisible cloak
To mind your life.

Love
Susie x Dan is safely home.

Susie, thankyou for that wonderful poem with these evocative images. I can see the man now, head up looking forward, on his way.
As always love to you my friend and thankyou for your oh so generous sharing of all the moments with Dan and especially these last days of the journey.

Heard the news an hour later from Morag. Not shocked, just immeasurably saddened. We took out the best crystal, the wedding Ardbeg and with the room flooded with the westering sun, drank to Macfarlane's last voyage.
Love to all the family and to you Mags,
Lewis

My sister wrote this when my father in law died. I do not know where it comes from, but it meant a lot to me.

Whatever else happen, we will become elemental. There is no doubt that we will fly and race and swim. Our atoms and molecules cannot be contained in death and they will continue the journeys which we have begun. If our spirits join them so much the better. If not our spirits live on in the people whose lives we have touched.

He touched my life, and in a kitchen in Sussex we raised a glass and sadly but confidently wished him onward.

For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun?
And what is it to cease breathing but to free the breath from its restless tides,
that it may rise and expand and seek god unemcumbered?
Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing.
And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb.
And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then you shall truly dance. Kahlil Gibran
Mags, Dan enriched the lives of everyone he touched. In all the sadness, Dan sets sail with so much love.

Mags, I will miss Doug so much - he never had to be there for me, but he always was and I can't express how grateful and lucky I've been to get to know him. Thinking of you today and hoping to see you in the not too distant future, with all my love Helen
